Turtles on the move.
Well on May 20th l helped the first snapping turtle get across the road safely. She was on a mission to get across and when l showed up,she went up on all 4s and ran across the road with my behind her. Often the turtles will retreat inside the shell. A truck went by as l was trying to get to the this one and it didn't do that. It kept going. l held my breath. But we got her to the other side. Right in front of the turtle crossing sign. Please watch for these turtles on the move to lay their eggs. Is a critticle time for them. A snapper for instance must be AT LEAST 12 -15 years old before it is mature enough to even lay it's first clutch of precious eggs. Snappers are a special concern now. Blanding must be at least 12 years old and are threatened. Out of 8 Ontario turtles,7 are listed from special concern to endangered. Please go slower and help these guys across the roads to safety. Please report any turtles to me at sashagirl12001@yahoo.com or 431 1183. Or join the turtle tally at Toronto Zoo. www.torontozoo.com/adoptapond/turtletally.asp
Together we CAN make a difference.
